Cara O’Brien, a Michigan artist who is currently working and living in Whitehall, brings a wealth of experience to art projects. After her formal education culminated in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Central Michigan University, she continued to enjoy mentored art education under the tutelage of professional artist and designer Ray Jansma. Jansma’s example along with his encouragement supported the idea that being professional artist could be a viable career.
After years of working for nonprofits and after much thought, Cara left more traditional employment to pursue a career as a full time professional artist. Currently, she is exploring the possibilities of high fire porcelain clay. Whether is it in making jewelry or large sculptures, in all her work, she employs hand forming techniques and use of texture to create porcelain components. At Gallery Uptown, her contemporary jewelry features fun animal motifs, colorful contrasts and playful original designs. Her work is finished with lead free glazes and sterling silver findings.
