Current Show – May 2015 “Uncommon Threads”
Imagine fabrics and yarns and threads in the creative hands of very imaginative artists. “Uncommon Threads,” the new May show at Gallery Uptown/Walburg Gallery, explodes with creativity as ten local artists present their unique textile art in this very unusual show.
Gallery Uptown artist members Liz Lystra, Marilyn Ryan, Suzanne Moynihan, Valerie Boet and Eleanor Goudreau are joined by guest artists Mary Sundstrom, Nancy Johnson, Lana Campbell, Dawn Edwards and Anna Barth in an eclectic display of wall hangings, purses, quilts, dolls, felting and weaving.
“Uncommon Threads” runs through May 30. There will be an opening reception on Friday, May 1, from 5:30 to 8pm, with the artists on hand to talk about their work. The event is free and wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Gallery Uptown in Grand Haven kicks off summer with “Wood and Water,” a spectacular presentation that captures the spirit of the elements so plentiful in West Michigan. Gallery artist members Ron Campbell, Catherine McClung and Peter Johnson will showcase new work in their respective mediums of woodturning, watercolor, and pottery, alongside an impressive display 2-D and 3-D art from six guest artists.
Ron Campbell welcomes members from the Grand River Woodturners Guild in Grand Rapids — Tom Sampson, John Smith and Ralph Lindholm – in a show that includes many artistic and functional woodturnings.
Catherine McClung adds new compositions to her renowned collection of watercolor bird art, and Peter Johnson will feature four of his newest and largest pieces of pottery.
Rounding out “Wood and Water” will be wooded-themed quilts by Lana Campbell, leatherwork by Marcia and Art Perkins, and the unique techniques in the creation of metal art by Lori Kammarrad.
“Wood and Water” runs through June 29. There will be an opening reception on Friday, June 5, from 5:30 to 8pm, with the artists on hand to talk about their work. The event is free and wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
