Carol Brauer Schmidt’s oil pastel/resist paintings are a reflection of her joyful outlook on life. She builds layer upon layer of oil pastel with a watercolor resist for unity. Her sketchbooks are as much filled with words as with drawings. Quotes or phrases in a song, poem or conversation often inspire her work. Observation of people and their body language also play a part in the mood she strives to achieve.
Carol graduated from Valparaiso University, Indiana, with a degree in Art Education. She also studied at Oxbow/Art Institute of Chicago and Grand Valley State University’s Art Program, in Aix en Provence, France. She was an art instructor at St. John’s Lutheran School in Grand Haven, and she lives with her husband Harry in Spring Lake. . They have three married children and ten grandchildren, who give her plenty of reference for her work.
Carol has this to say about her work:
“My artwork emerges from the child in me who loves color and the feel of making marks on paper. Shapes motivate me, and my enjoyment comes from exaggerating and simplifying these shapes in color, form and texture…sometimes with a bit of whimsy.”
